Hyundai Kona Electric UK price, specs and HUGE range revealed

The brand-new electric car, based on the quirky internal combustion engine (ICE) of the same name.

Two model variants will be available to buy when it goes on sale - a 39kWh battery pack and 64kWh battery pack.

The lower-powered and shorter range 39kWh powertrain produces 136PS and 395Nm of torque allowing it to sprint from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 96mph.

It will be able to achieve around 186 miles of range on a single charge, making it a competitive model for the price.

Paying the extra cash and upgrading to the 64kWh battery pack significantly boosts the car’s credentials and range.

The larger battery pack and 204PS motor allow the car to go from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and achieve up to 292 miles of range on a single charge.

Including the government grant, of £4,500 for plug-in electric cars, prices for the car start at such £25,000 for the smaller battery pack and under £30,000 for the long-range model.

Its styling may not win many prizes with the new faux grille, but it is relatively inoffensive on the whole.

The car comes with a number of standard safety feature including Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Smart Cruise Control (ASCC) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

There are three different trim levels for the car which provide different levels of standard specification.

At the bottom of the range on the SE 39kWh, you still get a seven-inch display compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensor with a rear view camera, Bluetooth and a number of styling features.

Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO Hyundai Motor UK said “KONA Electric has already attracted a phenomenal level of interest from customers across the globe and we are expecting demand to be high with limited vehicle availability.

“Customers that want to be one of the first to own a KONA Electric will be able to place an order from August 2. Test drives will be facilitated through a dealer roadshow in due course.

“With the 64kWh offering a potential 300 mile range, KONA Electric will not only appeal to customers who are already familiar with battery electric technology but perhaps more importantly, will enable some customers to take the step into electric vehicles by not only removing range anxiety but by doing so with a stylish, technically advanced and affordable package.”

All KONA Electric models come with Hyundai’s industry-leading 5 Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty, Roadside Assistance package, 5 Year Annual Health Check, and 12 Year Anti Corrosion Warranty.

KONA Electric will initially be available to order exclusively from Hyundai’s Click to Buy website with rollout across the dealer network in 2019.

Pricing for the Hyundai Kona excluding the Government grant:

SE 39kWh - £29,495

Premium 39 kWh - £30,870

Premium 64 kWh - £33,995

Premium SE 64 kWh - £36,295
